"Strongly Focused Light and Beyond"
Prof. Lukas Novotny
University of Rochester

We will introduce the angular spectrum representation to derive a rigorous formulation of the focal field distribution in strongly focused laser beams. The fluorescence from suitably oriented single molecules can be used to experimentally map out the focal fields and to provide a comparison with theory. Vice versa, a known focal field distribution can be used to determine the dipole orientation of single molecules and hence to monitor orientational dynamics due to interactions with the local environment.
